Thing a Week 35: A Bedtime Story

"Daddy, will you tell me the story about the programmer again?"

"Sure, darling. Do you promise to go to sleep after I'm done?"

"Oh, yes! Uh huh!"

There once was a beautiful princess named Jane with long, black hair, and a slender frame like yours. She lived in a far away land with the King and Queen, and wanted more than anything in the world to marry, but her father—King Jackson—refused it. He said her marriage must be arranged; it was important to spreading (and gaining) wealth in the family.

Thing a Week 34: Justice

Did you know that you can sometimes tell when someone's hiding a gun in their pocket just by the way they walk? Sometimes they take shorter steps on one side or sometimes one of their arms swings a little less than the other, or sometimes they even walk with one hand in their pocket and the other out, swinging freely. It's not a sure-fire detection method, but it's enough to tell you when you might want to keep on your toes.

Thing a Week 33: A Moment of Silence

Finishing up from their crime scene—another murder in a long series from the Clover Killer, a man whose signature includes explosives and leaving behind a large four-leaf clover made of pure silver—three law enforcement officers strutted back to their black and white cruiser.

The largest of the three, Officer Henry, was furiously yelling: "Another dead! If we don't catch this guy soon..." He took a seat in the passenger side next to his partner—the driver—Officer Dash. He slammed his door shut in anger.

Thing a Week 32: 42 Problems

It was one of those confidential suspicions, not uncommon to the common man but at the same time unspeakable, of Joel Handerbury that the direction of his life could split in any direction, at any time, for better or for worse. Each day he spent, couped up in his modest house outside of the town of Affenshire, was saturated with questions of what ifs and what thens. Whether or not to bathe, he deliberated upon every day, could leave him vulnerable to an unwelcome intruder, or on the other side of the consequence spectrum, positively affect his relations with an unexpected guest.

StarCraft 2: How to Cannon Rush

Here's a quick lowdown of the early-game cannon rush:

  1. Build a Probe and make it gather minerals.
  2. Build another Probe as the first finishes.
  3. As the second probe finishes, build a Pylon next to your Nexus and rush out to the enemy base with the Probe. I usually hotkey the Probe 1, and the Nexus 2.
  4. Depending on the size of the map, you can either warp in another Probe while you traverse the map or save the minerals. You should probably build a Probe on the larger maps. If you do, use a Chrono Boost on the Nexus to pump it out faster.

Thing a Week 31: Shark Week

Normally, I would turn my pillow over to get to the colder side after I've sat up at night writing. I normally set my laptop on my pillow and prop myself up on one elbow to write, and the warmth of the laptop lingers on my pillow afterwards. When I can't stand to keep my eyelids open any longer, I slip my laptop under my bed, turn my pillow over, and lay my head down where my electronic baby was just moments before. That's what I'd normally do.

Not tonight though. It's been a rough day.

Photoshop: I Am President (Barack Obama)

This was done quite a while ago, but I think it's my favorite photoshopped image that I've done, so I'm posting it below. It's big, so I scaled it down; click it to see the full-size picture.

Thing a Week 30: Why Celebrities Overdose in Hotels Rather Than Their Home

Question: Why is it that celebrities seem to overdose only in hotels, rather than in their or their friends' houses?

Ivan Pavlov was the first to show us in the late 1800s that classical conditioning is a powerful tool in human behavior[1]. He showed us that the environment we're currently in can have a large effect on our actions, but also in parts of our body we're don't know about.

Dual Boot Menu Location on EEEPC 1005HA

Quick post, because, although this is a very simple tip and looked-for constantly, it's not very documented on the Internet. That is: where is the menu to boot to other devices on the EEEPC 1005HA?

It's not marked when you boot up. However, you can access it by:

  • Pressing Esc in the very first EEEPC screen when you first power on your netbook

Note that if you press Esc multiple times, the boot screen may not show. Just press it once. Be patient, grasshopper.

Thing a Week 29: The Upgrade Pt. 3

FJIN NETWORK NOTICE

On the first of August, the entire FJIN Network will be undergoing scheduled maintenance. All Nodes currently connected to the Network will be temporarily disconnected for a period of seven (7) days. Your connection will be reestablished automatically when the maintenance is complete.

During this time, you may experience several mild symptoms including confusion, nausea, a feeling of disconnection, and the inability to speak or process information. This is normal, and you must remember that it is only temporary while we upgrade the Network infrastructure.
